You have probably heard of Melasma which is characterized by dark spots on the face and is very common during and after pregnancy.

This is part of a skin pigmentation disorder and today I am going to tell you more details about how it manifests itself and what are the best tips to unify your skin tone and prevent it.

How does Melasma develop?

Melasma is a hyperproduction of Melanin that causes dark spots on the skin. It manifests itself mainly on the face, in areas such as the cheeks, nose, forehead and around the lips.

Not only does it happen due to a hormonal condition during and after pregnancy, it is also common for it to be caused by the consumption of contraceptives or some drugs or exposure to the sun without sun protection.

What types of Melasma exist?

Dermal Melasma: It affects the deeper layers of the skin (internal) and causes the spots to turn a grayish blue color.

Epidermal Melasma: It is generated in the most superficial (external) layer and generates dark brown spots.

Mixed Melasma: It combines the two previous cases (internal and external) and may have more complexity in its treatment.
